• It is a more finished product. Mem has had years of polish on its editor, its chat, and its desktop app. NoteMCP is younger and it shows in places.
• Its AI is tuned to its own data. An assistant built for one corpus, by the people who designed that corpus, can do things a general-purpose model reading over a protocol cannot.
• You may not want a second surface. If you do all your thinking in one app and have no interest in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor reading anything, then the entire premise of NoteMCP is overhead you are not being paid for.

• Your notes are not trapped in one assistant. Connect Claude today, ChatGPT tomorrow, an agent you wrote yourself next year. The memory does not move; the reader does.
• It takes every shape of thing. A voice memo, a screenshot, a link with its preview, a two-line thought at 2am. Mem is a notes-and-documents app; NoteMCP is a place to put whatever just happened.
• Voice is included, not absent. Recordings are transcribed automatically and become searchable text — including a recording that switches language mid-sentence.
• The code is public. You can read exactly what happens to your notes, and run the whole thing yourself if the company ever disappoints you.
• The free plan caps a count, not a calendar. Your first hundred saves stay forever rather than expiring after a month.

The real difference, in one sentence

Mem answers "what did I write about pricing?" inside Mem. NoteMCP answers it inside whatever you happen to have open — and then that assistant, which also has your codebase, your calendar and the document you are drafting, can do something with the answer.

That is the whole argument. An AI that can read your notes but nothing else is a better search box. An AI that can read your notes alongside everything else it already has is a different kind of tool. MCP is what makes the second one possible, and it is an open standard rather than a NoteMCP invention — which means Mem could adopt it, and this page would change the day it did.

Ask one question: do you want to talk to your notes, or do you want your assistant to have read them?

Does Mem support MCP?

Not as of August 2026 — Mem's AI features work inside Mem, and there is no published Model Context Protocol endpoint you can connect Claude or ChatGPT to. NoteMCP publishes one at https://notemcp.com/mcp, and connecting a client is one click in Claude and a pasted URL everywhere else.

Can I move my notes from Mem to NoteMCP?

Mem exports as Markdown, and NoteMCP stores notes as Markdown, so the text survives the trip intact. A bulk importer is on the roadmap; today you paste, and formatting is preserved.

Is NoteMCP just Mem with an API bolted on?

No — an API is something you write code against. MCP is something you connect, and then your assistant uses it on its own, in plain language, without you writing anything. The practical difference is that "search my notes for the churn review" is a thing you say, not a thing you build.

Which one is cheaper?

Both offer a free tier and a paid plan in the same range; check mem.ai and NoteMCP's pricing for today's numbers, because both move. The more durable difference is what the free tiers cap: NoteMCP's free plan limits how many notes you keep, not how long you keep them, and includes AI access rather than reserving it for the paid tier.
