Where Apple Notes is the better choice

• It costs nothing and it is already there. No account, no install, no decision. That beats every feature list for a note you will read once.
• Deep in the operating system. Lock-screen access, the Apple Pencil, the scanner, the share sheet everywhere, and it works with no internet.
• Handwriting and drawing, which NoteMCP has no answer to at all.
• If you live entirely inside Apple's devices and never want an AI reading your notes, there is no argument here worth making.

Where NoteMCP is the better choice

• Any AI you use can read your notes. This is the whole difference. Apple Notes has no MCP endpoint and no way for Claude or ChatGPT to search it.
• Search that finds what you meant. Apple Notes matches words. If you have forgotten the words — which is the entire reason you are searching — it has nothing for you.
• It is not Apple-only. An Android phone, a work laptop, a browser.
• Voice notes are recordings, not dictation. Record a forty-minute call and get transcribed, searchable text, including across two languages.
• Links stay recognisable, with the headline and picture, instead of a blue address you will not recognise in March.
• Plain Markdown you can take with you.

The real difference

Apple Notes is a very good notebook that is closed at both ends: it only runs on Apple's hardware, and only Apple's software can read what is in it. For years that was a reasonable trade, because nothing else needed to read your notes anyway.

That changed. The useful question now is not "where do I write this down" but "what can read it back". A note in Apple Notes can be read by you, on an Apple device, if you remember roughly what it said. A note in NoteMCP can be found by an assistant that has also read your codebase, your draft and your calendar, on whatever device you happen to be holding.

Can ChatGPT or Claude read my Apple Notes?

No. Apple Notes has no Model Context Protocol server and no public API an assistant can connect to. Some macOS scripting bridges exist, but they require a Mac to be awake and running, and they do not work from a phone. NoteMCP publishes an endpoint at https://notemcp.com/mcp that any MCP client connects to in one step.

Is NoteMCP free like Apple Notes?

There is a free plan — your first 100 saves, kept forever, with AI access included. It is not free forever at any volume, which Apple Notes is. That is a real difference and worth being clear about.

Does NoteMCP work on iPhone?

Yes. It installs from the browser and behaves like an app, quick-tag grid included. One honest gap: iOS does not yet let web apps join the system share sheet, so on an iPhone you capture from inside NoteMCP rather than sharing into it from other apps. On Android, sharing into it works from anywhere.

What about privacy — Apple keeps my notes on my devices?

Apple's story is strong here, and a hosted app cannot match end-to-end encryption on your own hardware. What NoteMCP offers instead is that the code is public, so what happens to your notes is checkable rather than promised, and notes are exportable as plain Markdown from any plan.
